The Mountain R/C Flyers originated in Arnold when Pat Paige moved there in 1976. Through much effort he located a few more interested parties, Don Bennett, Jim Stowe, Don Chipman, and Steve Peery. They started to get together once a month to talk R/C airplanes, and started a search for a flying site. The first site was the top of the old Blagen Mill Pond dam, surrounded with towering pine and cedar trees. We flew from this site for several years, (most experienced flyers would not fly from there today), but its what we had, and what we used. The Club found a few more members, and looked for a better flying site. We flew at the old runway at Frogtown, at a ranchers field on Dogtown Road, at another ranchers field near Vallecito, and some roads near Copperopolis. This last mentioned site is where we came into contact with another new member Jim Coulter. Jim and his son, Jim, each owned and flew full size Luscombe 8 series Silvaires from a dirt/grass runway on their ranch next to their homes. Jim (Sr.) also loved model airplanes and he invited the Mt. R/C Flyers to fly off their runway. The Mt. R/C Flyers became a charter AMA club in 1981 and started calling Coulter Field home around 1985 (?) We do not own it or lease it but are allowed the privilege of flying there by the kindness of the Coulter family whose home is next to the runway. We now have a 420' x 36' asphalt runway and a 120'x 60' pit/taxiway/pilot station.
