Restoration of Water System
Logo of CPUDYears ago a group of people thought that something should be done to improve the reliability and quality of our water. There were leaks throughout the water system and the ditch system was not reliable.
Quote from surveyor:
"The existing canal system, over 18 miles long, is consistantly in need of repair. It is subject to outage by slides in wet weather and by ice in cold weather. The flumes are vulnerable to destruction by fire and even under the best of conditions, half of the water diverted is lost by leakage. All of the District's reservoirs are of earthen construction and are uncovered. The canals and reservoirs are all subject to human, animal, and aquatic pollution. Other than chlorination, no treatment is provided. Not only is this unsafe from a public health standpoint, but the water is corrosive to steel pipes."
So, they found a way to clean up the system.
  • Provide reliable off-stream storage.
  • Provide full treatment, including filtration and adjustment for corrosives.
  • Deliver treated water in sealed conduits to covered tanks located near the points of use.
  • Improve pressures and boost quantities available for fire flow.

  • Summary of the redesigned water supply sytem:
Water will be pumped from South Fork Mokelumne River to a new 2,000 acre-foot reservior near Rail Road Flat. No water will be taken when the river is turbid. A treatment plant will be built at the outlet of the reservoir and treated water will be delivered by a gravity pipeline to new steel storage reservoirs at Mokelumne Hill and San Andreas. No water will be lost and the hazards and maintenance costs of the canal will be eliminated. The facilities have been sized to provide over three times as much water as is now being used.
