Spot in a box

Spot recovered from his illness, we still don't know what was wrong with him, but he is gaining weight, getting spoiled, and being an overall great cat again. After spending a week in the vet hospital, not eating, his only change now is his tail went gray after all the stress !

Oreo - A healthy cat

Feb 17th, 2001 - Oreo, who is almost 13 years old has a broken leg! Apparently he jumped off of Shannon's desk and landed wrong, and broke his femur bone in the back leg. Oreo under went surgery and they placed a pin in his leg. He looks like Frankenstein now, all shaved, big scar, but he should make a full recovery. We should have a wing all to ourselves at the vet!

May 20, 2001 - Oreo has taken a turn for the worse, and possibly fell or jumped again and couldn't walk this weekend. The vet removed the pin from his leg, and we will see what happens in the next few weeks. Please keep him in your thoughts, he is a very loving kitty, and we aren't ready to lose him after all of this.

July 10th - Oreo doesn't want to eat anymore, so we are hand feeding him, warming his food, shoving it into his mouth if we have to.

July 17th - Oreo will eat some on his own, every couple days, so in the meantime, I am putting my fingers at risk, and force feeding him.

Oreo after surgery

Oreo - August 4th, 2001 - We lost the battle with what the vets think was bone cancer. On the 4th, I picked up Oreo from his basket, and he couldn't stand on his back legs, up until this afternoon, he limped to me where ever I was, and layed at my feet to lick my legs, and purr. The "Big O" has he had been nicknamed by a dear friend, went from a large 15 pound cat, down to 8 pounds. The hardest moment in life has to be to take your beloved pet to the vet, not to return.... Oreo lives in our hearts forever.

Shannon and Joe in Cap and Gown

Shannon graduated June 9th from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in Business Economics. Now she and her fiancee, Joe are off to New York City, where Joe will be attending law school at New York University.

Shannon and Joe got all settled into their new apartment in August, I went back with them for a week, and we shopped for the basics, dishes, glasses, coffee pot, toaster, and FOOD. Furniture was purchased and scheduled for delivery, so I tearfully said goodbye, and came home. Now, I am planning our next trip!

Mitsuko from Japan and Lynda Cooking
September 2001 has been very busy for us, we hosted a Japanese lady for 3 weeks, while the Darby fire raged. We had to teach her the water conservation efforts that we have all had to deal with since our water supply flume was destroyed in the fire!

Mitsuko, we call her Mitsi, has taught me how to cook tempura, rice and sushi.

9/11/2001 - The apartment Shannon and Joe moved into was only 3 blocks from the World Trade Center. Shannon was home at the time of the attacks, on September 11, 2001. After the first tower collasped, and her window went black, she left the apartment with some other residents with wet tshirts wrapped around their faces! The dust, smoke and debris was incredible she said, it was so dark outside that they could barely see. They were walking south toward Battery Park, when the group heard screaming, "The second tower is going, RUN" and they did RUN.

Once Shannon was out of immediate danger she got a call through to me, and I told her where Joe was waiting for her at the NY University campus. Thank goodness they got back together so quickly. They are safe, and temporarily being housed by NYU in a studio apartment. They got clothes donated, and some other basics.

Tuesday, one week since the attacks they were allowed into their apartment to gather important papers, etc under National Guard escort. Both Shannon and Joe grabbed what they could quickly, as the smell of rotting food in all the refridgerators and trash is overpowering, but the leasing company is taking care of that. There is still no power, water, gas or phone service to the lower portion of Manhattan.

Shannon and Joe were able to return to their apartment 3 weeks after September 11th. The leasing company had pretty much cleaned up the trash and spoiled food, and dust in the lobbies, very little dust actually was in their apartment.

The rooftop patio gives a pretty good view of most of ground zero, and the surrounding buildings that were damaged, Larry and I visited in October, one month after 9/11 and were shocked at the devastation to the entire area, in roads torn up, and wet from everything being washed down continually. All the debris from the buildings was removed by 18 wheelers down the street in front of Shannon and Joe's apartment, what incredible twisted steel beams we saw being carted away.

November 22, 2001 - Thanksgiving Day was my mother, Lena's 80th birthday, and we celebrated by having a big family Thanksgiving here at our house. 28 persons in all, and 5 generations present.

Christmas was nice as Shannon and Joe were once again home, having come home through very tough airport security at Thanksgiving.

2001 ended quietly, thank goodness, with a New Year's at home with just a couple of friends as Lynda laid on an ice back for a sore shoulder.

For info on the year 2000, you can still see what we have been up to.

For what happened in 1999
